Cellar clearance in Leeds
Plenty of older Leeds houses, especially terraces, have a cellar under them, and plenty of those have become a dumping ground. Offload does cellar clearance as part of our waste removal Leeds service, and we know the LS postcodes well enough to plan for the way these houses are built.

Steps, low headroom and the damp
Everything in a cellar has to come up a staircase, and cellar stairs are often steep, narrow and worn. That slows the carrying and limits what a person can safely hold. Low ceilings mean bending, and a light bulb on a bare wire is not always enough, so we bring a torch. A cellar with a coal hole or a street-level grate is no help for getting things out, and we do not treat it as a route unless you tell us it is safe and clear.
Damp is common but varies a great deal. A dry cellar with a few boxes is one job, and a wet one with soggy cardboard and rotting timber is another. Send a photo and tell us honestly about it. We do not claim to fix damp, and if there is standing water or a smell that worries you, sort that first. Old paint tins, chemicals and jars of unknown liquid stay with you.
What to put in your photos
- The top of the steps and the door, so we can judge width and headroom
- Two or three views of the cellar itself from different corners
- Anything heavy, such as old furniture, sacks of solid material or scrap metal
- Signs of damp, water or mould, even if it looks minor

Where it goes
What comes out of a cellar is usually a mix. Sound furniture and household goods may be reused, and timber, metal and paper are recycled. Damp, mouldy or rotten material is not suited to reuse and generally goes for energy recovery.

Do you clear cellars with damp or water in them?
We can clear damp cellars, but standing water is a problem to fix first. Tell us what you can see and send photos.
Can you take things out through a coal hole?
Only if you tell us it is safe, clear and big enough. Most jobs go up the main steps.
What about very low ceilings?
We work around them, but it slows things down and limits what can be carried. Tell us the headroom if you can measure it.
Do you take old paint and chemicals from the cellar?
No. Set them aside and check leeds.gov.uk for where to take them. We take the rest.
